MISSION STATEMENT
The purpose of the JERRY MALLOY NEGRO LEAGUE CONFERENCE is to encourage the study and research of African American baseball and its influence on society, sport history, and racial barriers. The Conference promotes activities to enhance scholarly, educational, and literary objectives.
The annual JERRY MALLOY NEGRO LEAGUE CONFERENCE is hosted by the NEGRO LEAGUES COMMITTEE, a component of the SOCIETY FOR AMERICAN BASEBALL RESEARCH (SABR), a non-profit organization. The Conference is the only symposium for the past 11 years dedicated exclusively to the examination of black baseball history.
Various awards are given annually:
The Robert Peterson Recognition Award: for bodies of work that increase public awareness on the Negro Leagues.
The John Coates Next Generation Award: for recognition of outstanding achievement and dedication by newcomers to the research field.
Normal “Tweed” Webb Lifetime Achievement: to recognize long-term contributions to the field of Negro League research.
The Most Valuable Partner (MVP): for financial contributors to the conference.
Email award nominations to: Dick Clark
All conferences are scheduled to include a trip to a professional baseball game, host a trivia contest, a player panel discussion, with visits to local historic places.
Venues have been hosted in Harrisburg (PA) (thrice), Atlantic City, Chicago (twice), Kansas City (twice), Memphis, Portsmouth (VA), and Cleveland. Possible future sites include Birmingham, Memphis, and Baltimore.
In celebration of two championship teams Pittsburgh Crawfords and the Homestead Grays, the Malloy Conference goes to Pittsburgh for the 2009 conference, on July 16-18, at the Heinz Center in Pittsburgh, PA.
